On 3 December 2008, the Scientific and Practical Seminar “Patent Auctions in Russia — Why Not?” was held in Moscow. It was organised by the Russian Chapter of the Licensing Executives Society International (LES Russia) with the support of the law firm Gorodissky & Partners.
The seminar was attended by major rights holders, representatives of business communities, scientific and technical centres, the Moscow Committee for Science and Technology, patent attorneys and lawyers from Russian and foreign companies specialising in intellectual property protection, as well as journalists.
The seminar was held in the form of a round table, allowing participants to communicate freely with the invited expert speakers, express their opinions, ask questions, model and analyse complex practical situations arising in the market today.
President of LES Russia N.N. Karpova opened the seminar and introduced Mr R. Olson, head of Ocean Tomo (USA, Chicago), a company organising patent auctions in the United States. Mr Olson spoke about methods of conducting patent auctions, principles for selecting patents for auctions and the “pitfalls” of U.S. legislation in this area.
V.I. Ivanov, PhD in Engineering, General Director of CJSC “All-Russian United Electronic Intellectual Property Exchange ‘VEBIS’”, then gave a presentation entitled “Electronic Intellectual Property Exchange in Russia: Problems and Prospects for Development”.
The seminar programme concluded with the following presentations:
In conclusion, President of LES Russia N.N. Karpova summed up the seminar and thanked the participants for their active involvement.

Mironova, Head of the Electronic Innovations and Information Technologies Complex of the Moscow Committee for Science and Technology, and M.V. Kirillov-Ugryumov, United Consultants FDP;
- “Regulatory Support for Commercial Transactions Involving Intellectual Property in Russia” by V.F. Fedorkov, Deputy Director of the Department of State Scientific, Technical and Innovation Policy of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
In conclusion, President of LES Russia N.N. Karpova summed up the seminar and thanked the participants for their active involvement.
