On behalf of the Organising Committee for the LESI 2014 International Conference and the Council of the Russian Licensing Society, I would like to invite you to take part in a unique event for Russia. Our country will host the international annual conference “LES International Annual Meeting, Moscow 2014”, devoted to intellectual property protection, licensing and technology transfer. Germany, Japan, the United States, France, Canada, Korea, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Brazil and many other countries are sending their delegates to Russia to participate in the Conference.
For the first time, Russian participants have a unique opportunity to attend one of the leading international conferences in the field of intellectual property without leaving the country. To participate in LESI 2014, you do not need to obtain a visa or purchase expensive air tickets, insurance or hotel accommodation. Simply register as a Conference participant by 1 April 2014 to have an opportunity to attend presentations and Round Tables by leading international intellectual property specialists, personally meet representatives of international companies, corporations and universities, and establish new business contacts and friendships with people from different countries.
Conference Participants

LESI — the World’s Largest Association of Intellectual Property Protection Specialists
Today, LESI is the largest international organisation in the field of intellectual property. The Society has more than 12,000 members from over 80 countries worldwide, facilitating the establishment and expansion of business contacts.
LESI members represent industrial companies, law and consulting firms, scientific, financial, governmental and commercial organisations in different countries. They include entrepreneurs, engineers, inventors, lawyers, patent attorneys, scientists, financiers, economists, civil servants and students.
LESI combines the interests of industry and business representatives, i.e. intellectual property owners, on the one hand, and lawyers, patent attorneys and consultants, i.e. specialists in intellectual property protection and licensing, on the other.
History of LESI
The Licensing Executives Society International (LESI) is one of the leading international organisations in the field of intellectual property, with a history of more than 50 years. LESI currently has 32 national and regional chapters worldwide, including Russia. This non-profit organisation brings together specialists in intellectual property and related fields interested in technology transfer, licensing and the protection of intellectual property rights. LESI publishes the quarterly journal LES Nouvelles, which is distributed among the organisation’s members.
The history of LESI as a professional organisation began in 1965, when representatives of 79 American companies gathered for the first convention in Hollywood Beach, Florida, USA. This was the founding meeting of the national Licensing Executives Society (LES).
In 1973, at an international conference in San Francisco, USA, delegates from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Italy and Japan announced the transformation of the national American LES into an international society — LES International.
From that moment, LESI began its development as a major and influential international organisation. Only a few years ago, it included 17 national organisations; today it comprises 33 major national associations from different countries.
The largest and most influential national associations are LES USA-Canada, with more than 5,000 members, and LES Germany, with around 800 members. Representatives of countries that do not have their own association may join LES by applying to the organisation of another country. For example, representatives of Belarus, where there is currently no national association, may join LES Russia and enjoy all the rights and benefits of international membership.
In recent years, LESI has succeeded in establishing a unique system for training and certifying licensing specialists, enabling participants to complete training, pass an international examination and obtain a licensing specialist certificate.
Organisation Membership
Among LESI members, approximately 30% are licensing specialists, 20% are company vice presidents and chief executives, 18% are lawyers and patent attorneys, 14% are department directors, around 10% are technology transfer specialists, and 8% represent other professions.
In terms of organisations represented, 37% come from corporations, 22% from law firms, 18% are consultants, 4% represent private business, 18% represent government organisations and universities, and 1% are students.
Russian Licensing Society (LES Russia)
LES Russia was founded in Moscow on 6 August 1994. In October of the same year, at an international conference held in Hawaii, USA, Russia was officially admitted to LESI as a national chapter.
The current President of LES Russia is S.A. Dorofeev of the law firm Gorodissky & Partners. Special mention should also be made of the contribution of N.N. Karpova, Professor and Head of the Department of International Business at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, who headed LES Russia as President for several years and continues to work actively as a member of the LES Russia Council.
LES Russia is actively growing and developing. Every year, it holds a number of interesting professional seminars, meetings and lectures. Some of them are offered free of charge or at a substantial discount to LES Russia members.
Leading intellectual property specialists not only from Russia but also from many other countries speak at the seminars. We will be pleased to welcome you among the members of LES Russia.
LESI Conferences
Every year, LESI holds international conferences and seminars featuring well-known experts in intellectual property, licensing and technology transfer. Recent conferences were held in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, in 2013 and in New Zealand, Auckland, in 2012.
National associations also hold local conferences and seminars devoted to national legislation and specific aspects of licensing, technology transfer and intellectual property protection in their respective regions.
Large associations such as LES USA-Canada hold one major conference and several smaller seminars on specific issues each year. LES USA-Canada usually holds its conference in the United States in autumn and, beginning in 2014, will also hold a spring conference. The first spring conference will be held in New York in March 2014.
The First LESI International Conference in Russia
We are proud that LES Russia succeeded in winning the competition to host the LESI 2014 Conference. Our country is investing considerable effort and funding in the development of high-technology industries, including the construction and development of the Skolkovo Science and Technology Centre.
Taken together, all of this attracts the interest of investors from different countries. These include not only major Western corporations, but also small and medium-sized businesses from Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, China and Asian countries.
One of the main issues of interest to all new market participants is the protection of intellectual property in Russia and the CIS countries, registration of trademarks, inventions and other intellectual property, licensing and technology transfer. These topics will be central to the upcoming LESI 2014 Conference.
As Russia is an active member of BRICS, a number of presentations and speeches will also be devoted to this subject, including specific intellectual property issues faced by developing countries.
During and After the Conference
The Conference Organising Committee has made arrangements in advance to ensure that participants and guests can become acquainted not only with Russian legislation and intellectual property practice, but also with the country itself.
Excursions are planned, ranging from tours of Moscow and two- or three-day trips to St Petersburg to visits to Olympic Sochi, the Golden Ring and even Lake Baikal.
