A seminar entitled “Valuation of Intellectual Property”, organised by the Russian Licensing Society (LES Russia) and the Licensing Society of Germany (LES Germany), was held in Moscow.

A seminar entitled “Valuation of Intellectual Property”, organised by the Russian Licensing Society (LES Russia) and the Licensing Society of Germany (LES Germany), was held in Moscow. The seminar was attended by 45 participants from Germany, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Ukraine and Russia.
The presentations covered various aspects of intellectual property valuation, including both Russian and German practice. The presentations by Mr H. Goddar and Mr G. Isenbruck (Germany) generated considerable interest among the seminar participants. Dr Isenbruck, Partner at the law firm Bardehle, Pagenberg, Dost, Altenburg, Geissler, Isenbruck, gave a presentation entitled “The History of Intellectual Property Valuation and Personal Experience over the Last 10 Years”, devoted to theoretical aspects of valuation, in particular determining the economic life of various intellectual property assets, risk levels and royalty rates. Dr Goddar, Partner at the law firm Boehmert & Boehmert, considered several practical situations involving the valuation of patents and know-how.
A presentation by Mr A. Roeder, representative of the international audit firm Deloitte & Touche (Germany), was devoted to the application of intellectual property valuation results in business from another perspective — that of audit firms and tax authorities. Similar Russian practice was considered by Mr A. Kolchin (Russia), Manager of the Tax Department at PricewaterhouseCoopers (Russia), in his presentation “Specific Features of Intellectual Property Valuation for Tax Purposes”.
B. Leontiev, General Director of the Institute for Certification and Valuation of Intellectual Property, spoke about state regulation of intellectual property valuation. His presentation was devoted to the development by the Ministry of Property Relations of the Russian Federation of methodological recommendations for the valuation and inventory of intangible assets.
Russian valuation practice was addressed in a presentation by Yu. Samsonenko, Intellectual Property Valuation Expert at the law firm Gorodissky & Partners. The specific features of intangible asset valuation, information gathering, and the absence of approved valuation methodologies accepted by all market participants were among the issues that generated interest among seminar participants representing law firms, patent firms, valuation companies and organisations actively using intellectual property.
