Meeting of the LES Japan and LES Russia Delegations

On 26 September, delegations from LES Japan and LES Russia met at the offices of Gorodissky & Partners in Moscow. The Japanese delegation included Yoshihiro Obayashi (Yodoyabashi & Yamagami LPC), Nobuo Sugiura (Shobayashi International Patent & Trademark Office), Jiro Furube (Serio Patent & Trademark Attorneys), Yumiko Yuki (Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science), and Kazuaki Tasaka (Nagasawa Patent Firm). The Russian delegation included Valery Medvedev, Evgeny Alexandrov, Sergey Dorofeev, Sergey Medvedev, and Sergey Vasiliev of Gorodissky & Partners.
During the meeting, the delegations exchanged views on opportunities for further cooperation between the two national licensing societies, the organization of joint seminars, and the participation of LES Russia members in the upcoming LES International Annual Conference in Yokohama in May 2019.
A seminar was also held for the Japanese delegation on current developments in the regulation of parallel imports in Japan and Russia. Jiro Furube presented an overview of parallel-import practices in Japan; Sergey Vasiliev discussed recent developments in approaches to parallel imports in Russia; and Evgenia Smolnikova reviewed Russian case law relating to parallel imports.
The presentations generated considerable interest and prompted numerous questions from the audience. The seminar was attended by 35 participants. The Japanese delegation expressed interest in holding several similar seminars in Moscow on securing intellectual property protection in Russia and enforcing IP rights before Russian courts and administrative authorities.
